We are starting a new video game review/impressions series.
This isn’t going to be a super-official look at games, this is going to be literally just my thoughts.
The game I will look at today is Sniper Elite 5.
This is actually the first Sniper Elite game I’ve ever played. Despite there being 5 previous ones (That I know of) I never sat down and decided to play the games until now. I was not disappointed.
This game was one of the most fun I have ever played. There are so many ways to complete each mission, there are so many ways to play the game. You can go in stealthy or guns blazing. You can even do half and half. The ability you have to control how you play makes the game so enjoyable. I can’t tell you how many times I messed up doing a mission stealthy and found myself trapped with a ton of enemies surrounding me. In these cases, I’d spend 20-30 minutes moving from place to place trying to finish them off as they tried to find me These moments felt realistic and fun. The shooting never felt repetitive. The survival mode is also great.
I honestly struggled to find downsides to this game. I will give a few I found.
A lack of weapons could be one. I would say that there is a decent amount of weapons but I was never all that excited about the selection. I honestly didn’t care much but to some, this will be a bigger deal. I also was not a fan of how you get the weapons. I understand they want a rank system to further increase how fun the game is but they really should have found something else to be unlocked. You should get most of these guns from the beginning.
Another thing is I think this game would have been even better if more focus was put on the killing of high-level Nazis. My favorite objectives were the ones where you had to kill a high-level Nazi. They felt much better than the ones that saw you blowing things up.
The last thing is the cover system. This is really the only part of the game I’d say is bad. The cover system felt weird and sometimes when I thought I was in cover I ended up not being. I also ran into issues when going down ladders or hanging from windows. The stuff works it is just very sensitive and frustrating. It certainly isn’t smooth.
Overall this game is one of my favorite games I have played in a long time. I will be playing it through again trying for a different style and seeing what I missed.
